Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 G SSM

Postby Bjorn van Sinttruije » Mon Jan 05, 2009 6:04 pm

It's about time (ain't it?) for me to start a lens gallery of my beloved Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 G SSM. So, here it is. If you have this lens, please add photos to the thread, I'd be happy to see what can do with this beauty!

A shot of me holding the 70-200mm in the days I didn't own one yet.
Was I excited? Yeah!

Thought I'd divide this gallery into categories, each with it's own sort of photography.

Control of dof is amazing. Lots of room for creativity. I did have a chance to try this lens in a camera shop in Montreal and found it a little bit complicated to use (shows my retardness in grasping things). There were some switches on the lens I just could not understand the meaning of.
The lens looked bigger than Canon's and Nikon's equivalents.

:x Oh stupid me! I really have to concentrate better when framing my photos!

There's not too many buttons on the 70-200mm. Have you ever held the 300mm f/2.8 (I have :D ), that's got 3 or 4 times as many buttons. But most of the time, one wouldn't use any of them. AF/MF-switch sits more comfortably on the back of my camera, I never use the DMF-switch and the focus limiter is very useful, that's the only one I really use. There's also three focus hold buttons, which I've never really used...

BTW do you ever find the 200mm limit a pain? Im used to my 75-300 and I would love this lens but im not to sure if i would miss the extra 100mm reach

Very nice examples Bjorn... looks like a great lens! This and the 24-70mm f2.8 would be a pretty sweet kit on the A900!

This is my dream lens, and your work exhibits it's many strengths. Recently I hired a Tamron 70-200 2.8, and was basically happy, it sells for around 750USD, but did find it had a tendency to hunt a little more than I would have liked. So, guess I'll start saving for this one.. :(

Yes Toby, I do! 200mm is too short for quite a few of my shots. But I'm not used to having anything longer, so it's not really a problem. I intend to get a 300mm f/2.8 some day, which would cover for the longer focal length, but that's gonna be years from now! Years, many years... Unless I win a prize in the lottery! :D

Thanks Gordon! The Zeiss 24-70mm f/2.8 SSM will be the next lens added to my bag, some time this year. No A900 though, not for some time at least... Although I'd love to have one, it's just a little expensive for someone my age. I'd better start saving for... the future, as my parents always tell me.

Lensbaby, be aware that even though this lens is a lot more expensive, is does tend to hunt in low-light conditions or with fast moving objects. This is mostly due to the camera's AF sensors, but still, it's a significant problem at times. I've had to switch to MF more than I'd like to get some of my available light shots...

Anyway I like your shoot & the Sony 70 200 f/2.8 lens are great for the Sony Alpha users BTW you're lucky to have one :D

WHAT  BND $3988 retail price ! ( Just checked at the Store recently ) Bjorn how much it cost when you bough it ( I mean this way too expensive than the Canon/Nikon 70 200 f/2.8 ) Is this the right price? :?

Yeah, I am lucky to have one. And I couldn't be without one to be honest. I bought it for €1429,-, which is reasonable for a Sony lens, but a lot more expensive than Canon's equivalent. Nikon is pretty much at the same price level, I believe...

Thanks for sharing all the excellent photos Bjorn! I really like some of them, (too many to comment on all of them), but I really like the tiger, merkat, prairie dog, the bird in flight (sweet capture on that) and the BW photos. You have a good eye. The results from the lens look great. I like the first shot of you using it too, big lens. Did it come with a lens hood?

Thanks Jim, I appreciate that! :D

Jim Hawksworth wrote:Did it come with a lens hood?

It did, yeah. The first shot was taken outside a store. I was just trying it then, still saving for it and I just had to hold it (otherwise it's often difficult to save for months and months and months in a row). The salesman didn't give me the hood with it (it was wrapped in multiple layers of plastic). In my unboxing video you can see the complete lens.

I can understand. I feel the same way about the Zeiss 85mm f/1.4, but I'm sure that once I get it, that feeling will fade away. Het bezit van de droom is het einde van de pret.

Start saving Charl, it's worth the effort!
