Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM (Not DO)

Postby hairyfrog » Mon Apr 07, 2008 8:00 pm

Hi All
had this lens a couple of weeks now and been very impressed so far.

- Autofocus is fast and quiet for a long lens
- Light enough to carry around (especially when compared to 24-105L!)
- Results very good, decent sharpness and contrast

Hi hairyfrog,

Thanks for adding another lens to our Gallery. It's particularly useful having a link to the full-sized originals.

Sorry to trouble you, but could you clarify what lens this actually is?

There is a Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM and a Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM. I presume, from your partial name, that you are referring to the latter as that lens starts at f/4.5. Confusingly, I note from your Signature that you also possess a Sigma 70-300 F4.5-5.6 and it occurs to me that you might have meant the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM but wrote F4.5 out of habit. :?

If you edit the title of your post with the full lens name then that should also rename the thread. If not then give me a shout and I'll do it. Thanks.

Bob.

Postby hairyfrog » Tue Apr 08, 2008 10:56 am

Yes I was indeed thinking of the sigma! Too many lenses ....

It is indeed the F4-5.6 non DO version.
Thanks

I've been surfing the web to find more sample-pictures with this lens. I used pixel-peeper.com.

I'm not sure.... but i cant find that many pin-sharp images.

Would be nice to hear from more users of this lens and how you rebuff my critisism that this lens dont seem to be very sharp.

I have had this lens for about 3 weeks now and so far I have been really impressed with it.

The range is excellent, image stabilizer works wonders, AF is fast even when fully extended to 300mm and the pictures I have taken are nice and sharp.

For me it was between this and the 70-200 F4 L. After trying them both at the local shop I opted for the 70-300mm even though it cost more because of the rebate on the L glass. End the end I am very happy with my choice, the image stabilizer and extra range more then make up for not having the L glass in the lens.

Only thing I wish I could do is turn the focus ring while the lens is set in AF mode. If you want to do any type of manual focusing you have to flip the switch.

Sample pic I took last night of the moon:

well this lens doesn't seem to be that popular for some reason :? :? I aint sure why, and i might be wrong.

However i collect mine from the shop tomorrow lunch time, i will give my opinion and sample pictures in due course.

I got this two today, a very cloudy day in Brazil.
Canon 40D
70-300mm f4-5.6 @ 300mm 5.6
ISO 400

For my personal taste, it could be a little more sharp (specially at 100% crop), but I think it is pretty much OK for that focal range.

Pic from the weekend - light was poor and at ISO 800 still
only managed 1/25 at 300mm.

Shot still came out sharp tho demonstrating the excellent IS on this lens.
Cheers

Can you please give the 100% Crop, I just want to see the detail :-). Thank you so much in advance.

Absolutely, you can't/won't always want something huge, white and unwelcome attention-getting. This is the Canon best lens that fits that bill, except maybe the DO version.
