BetterSurf - malware

Postby Bob Andersson » Fri Nov 15, 2013 10:53 am

Hi folks,

Got a shock this morning when, as a result of clicking the CameraLabs "login" link, I was told I had a chance to win an iPhone. Turns out there's a Firefox/Chrome extension called BetterSurf to blame.

There's an excellent piece on how to remove it at The Craft Nerd here. I've no idea how this software arrived on my PC - the only software installations I've done in the last few days are a Windows Update, a Firefox update, an Adobe Photoshop update and an Adobe Flash update. That last did come with the usual and very unwelcome offer to install McAfee, an option which has to be unchecked. I also did the same Firefox update on my Apple MacBook and BetterSurf wasn't installed there.

I did suffer an unexpected shutdown of Firefox yesterday. It seems as though this is a common occurrence when computers have been infected with this malware which raises a serious issue about the security of Firefox itself. The trouble is that if someone has discovered a way to trigger a Firefox stack overflow to install malware then it could happen even when visiting the most innocent of pages so long as that page is carrying the wrong advert from a third party.

All speculation on my part but if Firefox, still my preferred browser, or Chrome unexpectedly crash on you then remember this post and expect trouble!

.
 There's a world of difference between having won the chance to win an iPhone and actually winning one. I'm a strange boy but even I'm not strange enough to follow such links. But I was grateful that such blatant misbehaviour from my browser alerted me to trouble.

I did a full Norton Internet Security scan after my last post and it flagged "BetterSurf.exe" in a Windows Temp folder. Presumably that was the installer but I'm still no wiser as to how it arrived.

Hi Rozow,

Thanks for the info. I've not run the software that can be downloaded from the page you link to, and don't intend to I'm afraid, but there's also some good info in the text. My gut instinct was to remove your link altogether but I did download the software so that my copy of Norton could scan it and it Norton didn't complain. Yep, I'm that paranoid! Welcome to the forum.

Most site provide spyhunter links. It's not the best software

The best adware removal software: malwarebytes and adwcleaner. Both are free.

This sort of stuff can come from the most innocent sites, the one that surprised me most was a virus on a surf cam site I use a lot. I sent the Norton report on it and the said they had another report but they cannot find out how it was attached. Glad I use Norton products.

Cheers
