Hi folks, and welcome to October's assignment. The theme for this month is "Long exposure". ("Long" here is relative: it might be 10 seconds for landscapes, 1/8 of a second for street photography, etc. Just pick a shot that had a slower shutter speed than what you might normally shoot with.) In case you haven't joined our community but would like to showcase your work then why not Register now. It's free and we'd love to see what you can do.

1. You can only submit one picture, and it should be no longer than 1024 pixels on it's longest side.
2. The picture must be taken anytime in the last six months.
3. Exercise good judgement about what is appropriate on our forum (see our Forum Rules for more information).
4. Please include a sentence or two describing your picture or the process of taking it, and share some technical info such as the camera, lens, settings and processing.
5. If you have any questions, comments or pictures older than six months, please post them in the October Comments and Questions thread.

TEC 140 with an FLI ML16803 camera and Astrodon filters (3nm for the narrowband work)
8 x 1500 secs Ha, 18 x 1500 secs for each of OIII, NII and SII, 8 x 200 secs for each of R, G and B.

There's a little more about the image over in this thread. This is by far the most exposure time I've devoted to an astro-photograph to date. So long, in fact, that I'm almost loath to try a repeat on something else given the unreliability of the British weather.

Tuesday found me in Inverness, capital of Highland Scotland .... and what a grim, grey, damp, cold, windy, forbidding place it was too that day .... just the job for long exposure photos! Taken through glass from the 1st floor of a shopping mall, the traffic describes a sort of 'S' shape as it passes through this busy corner. Three buses and a couple of cars cooperated in just one of the several frames I shot.



Pentax K20D ISO100, 12 stops of ND filters, 4 seconds @ f.16. on tripod. Lighting dull, flat and dim!
PP: Much pulling of brightness and contrast to 'lift' the image. Crop, resize to 1024

Not as spectacular as those already posted, but I achieved my aim of getting the movement of the second hand.

I'll squeak in at the end of the month then:

A long shutter to capture the movement of the shoppers and contrast with the motionless stare of the stall keeper

1/13th second, 35mm, f16, ISO800

I tried to get the stillness of the river bank and the trees to contrast with the speed of the water rushing past.

Post processing: light crop, dodging of mossy rocks, reduce to 1000 pixels

Just after sunset on a Winter's evening in Melbourne. I love the red line going through in the lower third. this is actually the Port light on a boat travelling through the 30 second exposure.
