Sony Carl Zeiss 85mm f/1.4

Postby Bjorn van Sinttruije » Thu Mar 11, 2010 6:17 pm

Allow me to start a Lens gallery for this fantastic lens. I've only taken a couple of images with it so far, none of which show the true purpose of the 85mm (portraits), but it's a start...

First off, here's an unboxing video of the 85mm Zeiss:

Then, the first snaps:
Image
f/1.6 | 1/2500 sec. | ISO 100 | 85mm

Image
f/1.4 | 1/2000 sec | ISO 200

Image
f/1.4 | 1/80 sec | ISO 200

More to come soon!!! :D

Hi Bjorn,

I've added this lens to our Index - thanks for posting.

BTW, I've taken the liberty of renaming the thread as our intention is that where a single lens is capable of being fitted to multiple mounts only one thread should be created and it's my judgement that preceding the thread name with "(Sony)" would have risked someone else creating a similar thread preceded by, say, "Nikon". Hope that's OK.

This lens can only be used on Sony DSLRs Bob. It's a special design by Zeiss for Sony, with AF and a modern appearance, unlike the MF-models for brands like Nikon and Canon.
Also, this lens gives different results than it's MF Zeiss equivalent, so I'd think the optical design is slightly different too.

So I'd like to ask you to re-rename the thread! Thanks!

Hi Bjorn,

Well, I'm glad I asked and thanks for the clarification. So, from the Sony USA site I now see that this is a Sony SAL85F14Z, albeit one with the added cachet of the Zeiss name on the barrel. That means it has to go in the Sony section of the Index so I'll follow the precedent of your Sony Carl Zeiss 24-70mm f/2.8 SSM thread and precede "Carl" with "Sony", but this time without the brackets. Sorry for the confusion.

Because of a whole lot of work for university (year's almost over), I haven't been able to take a lot of pictures with the 1.4/85 Zeiss, especially because I tend to stick with the much more compact and, on APS-C, more versatile, 50mm.

I do have some new shots though:

f/1.4 | 1/1250th | ISO 100 | 85mm

f/1.4 | 1/5000th | ISO 100 | 85mm

You're probably looking for the other Carl Zeiss 85mm Elijah. This, while a Zeiss design, is the one manufactured by Sony, for Alpha DSLRs, with autofocus and a rather different design.

They're both great lenses though, highly recommended!

even it's a bit to light for me, you can see the clarity of this lens, it's as the American chopper gang says: AWWSOMEEEEEEEEEE.
