Deflector, Stand, & Mount

Postby Trevor Harris » Mon Oct 10, 2011 8:57 pm

I'm not sure if deflector is the correct generic name for it, but what I'm looking for is a descent combination of these three elements. I've used a stand, double swivel umbrella mount, and umbrella before and I'm happy with the results. But I'm looking to purchase my own.

I guess a 6' would be sufficient? What about a softbox VS umbrella? I currently have an SB-600 that I'd be using for my light source. What about the mounts? I've heard of a ball head type mount that's out there that sparks my interest. My loose budget is around $150. Any advice, suggestions, thoughts would be helpful.

Hi Trevor,

to at least offer a partial answer: Umbrellas server two purposes - to simulate a large light-source AND to direct the light.

A softbox serves the specific purpose of diffusing the light. Diffusion scatters the light.

Besides that nature of the light emanating from the two, an umbrella will have more range all else being equal. Softboxes are often positioned very close to the subject.

Good luck with your choices!

Cheers :)
