Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM

Postby seattlesteve » Wed Mar 05, 2008 1:07 pm

This is one of the main lenses for wedding and event photographers. It's rather large lens and has an even bigger hood. For some reason it seemed disproportionate the the lens size.

It does everything that you'd expect from Canon's "L"uxury line. It's gives you good colors, sharp images and is built like a tank. It gives you a constant f/2.8 throughout the range so it gives you a little more flexibility in the low light department. Optically is a top performer, but...in the end I thought the range was a little short and the wide end wasn't wide enough on a 1.6x body. This is truly a wonderful lens, but I think there are better options out there right now especially for EFS mount bodies.

Here's a few photos taken with the 20D.

54mm, 1/30th @ f/10, ISO800 (This one was shot at a higher f-stop to increase the dof)

Great shots Steve! Any chance of some portrait (or other shots) at 70mm f2.8 to show off the bokeh?

Yes :) that is of course. If needed wide for APS you can always get a Sigma EX 10-20/4,0-5,6 DC HSM (16-32mm)

But for quality of the picture, build quality and that red strip this 24-70 is my dream lens which I will get my hand on soon :D

Very nice picture you've taken.

Nice pix steve.
I'd like some more pictures from this lens, and as gordon suggested maybe some portraits.

Thanks,

Helllllo my little Steve...can I pick your brain on this lens, please?..I am considering this lens, have been "chosen" to fill an assitant wedding photographer position...from the school I am attending...the professor is a professional wedding photographer..much sought after..so this is a BIG DEAL for me. In another thread, I was trying to determine if THIS lens is the one for me...my other choice was the 24-105L f4 USM IS. My concern is that this 24-70 does not have IS...will I miss that? I have only used lenses with IS...so, the LAST thing I wanna do is turn in blurred work.
with the f2/8 do I even have to worry...this wedding reception will be held at the queen mary, and Roy has made me promise to send the boat back...but until then, I am still wondering, and not wanting to make a wrong choice...

What say you?
thank you so much..I can only purchase one or the other, and my first wedding assignment is on Nov. 1. So, I need to GET with it, and practice a little before hand...
I am wishing waddles to you.

I <3 my 24-70.

I <3 using f/2.8

I </3 using flash

Works perfectly for me, and you have a 70-300 (IS?) so the IS with a little bump in ISO should be fine - if its outside (on the deck) then you'll have no problems shooting at iso 100/200 (I'd shoot 200, for the faster shutter speed, noise increase is un-noticeable in real world situations)

Thanks dd_.

Decided I would head over to Calumet, and rent both of the lenses for a week or so..before I decide which one..am leaning towards this 24-70. Test the 24-105, and the 24-70, and see which one feels right for this situation..

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the 24-105 and 24-70 when you're done testing! :)

Nice shots with the "L" tank, steve.

I confess that I did not immediately recognise Pic #4!
When I saw that you said "SnS, you'll recognise this one" I looked closer and saw the "Capitaland" which told me it might be Singapore. For a second I even thought this was Hong Kong  Really haven't been to the place where you shot this from before (along the Singapore River i'd suppose).

A shot that was more recognisable as Singapore, was your shot with the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 HSM of the yellow-cross box(not a driver, not sure whats it called) that had all the Asian cars and the Hotel 81

From a now deleted duplicate thread Philv wrote:Well I to got try my new EF 24-70 f/2.8 F at a outdoor concert Wednesday. Normally the lighting is around medium to low but for this show I think I should have worn my sun glasses. It was more work trying to find a shot were they wasn't in the background.

Well more shows to come and I think I'll get it down.

Here's kind of what I was dealing with on the lighting.

Stunning lens, but I think I'm gunna go with the 24-105L to save some pennies and get more reach.

Great lens, build quality is great. Perfect walk around lens on the 5D, or even 40D. I use it for studio and nature.
