Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM

Hi folks,

Just a couple of shots at 24mm to get a thread for this lens started. They were taken last year when my 40D was very new. At the time I was still using an UV filter to protect the front of the lens. I have given up on that as, despite it being a fairly good one, I think any chromatic aberration in the corners of shots taken at 24mm is made slightly worse. The pictures were both taken without the benefit of a tripod (thank you "IS") and are clickable if so you can enjoy the full horror of pixel-peeping!

Here's a few photos on the longer end of the 24-105 mostly to demonstrate the handholdability (a new word?) of the lens with IS on. Like Bob said, it will save you when you're shooting without a tripod.

Hi folks,

This photo was originally posted in the "Natural Landscape photography" section but it's just occurred to me that as the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM is the kit lens for the 5D MkII it might be an idea to include it in this thread as an example of what the lens can do on a full frame body. I'll slap myself on the wrist for double-posting but excuse myself on the grounds that I haven't asked a question. ;)

The full size version is available by clicking the picture (7MB download) and it's only lightly cropped (5500×3516 from 5616x3744) so the twigs (nature's test card) in some of the corners give a good idea of what this lens is capable of at a benign f/8 and 24mm in combination with DPP's lens correction algorithms.

5D MkII, ISO 100, f/8, 1/125th handheld with IS On, EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM at 24mm

Canon's DPP software was used to do default de-vignetting and CA removal on the RAW file and the result exported as a 16 bit TIFF which was then loaded into Adobe Camera Raw for a few tweaks. Then Photoshop CS4 was used to remove a couple of plastic bottles from the river :roll: and to darken the sky slightly.

Finally got it hen, eh! Anyway why the 17-40 and 10-22, and 24-105 whats that all about then? You planning on upgrading to full frame very soon, a 5D Mk II in the running? :wink:

10-22 for very wide stuff, then 17-40 for wide-normal and then 24-105 for normal zoom! :)

That seems rather excesive, as you could have saved so much money with not buying the 17-40, as IMHO thats a waste of money, because you are only missing out on 2mm between your 10-22 and 24-105, you should sell it and get some, primes, you'll have so much fun with something like a 50mm f/1.4 prime :wink:
