I fear Mike is right.
Still, I didn't want to be among those responsible. See today's post.

Great shot Matthias, I don’t think one assignment portrays the death of the monthly assignment, it’s defeatist. All members just have to post.

Hi folks,

    ..Month..........Submissions..................Theme

    January.................3....................Candid (street) portrait
February...............11....................A photo starting with the letter 'S' (flagged as possibly the last OA)
    March..................13....................No theme restriction
    April.....................5....................Flight
    May......................3....................Dream
June.....................9...................."Domesticated Animals" - pet owners rejoiced
    July......................5....................Square

Maybe, with the more modest forum activity these days, "On Assignment" should transform into "Photo of the Month" with no thematic restriction.

What do you think?

Any different idea is worth a try.

It must be worth a go, although there has been little in the way of picture posting anywhere on the site of late. That said, traffic here has always been more on the comment/opinion side but even that is slow just now. A spark is needed, perhaps.

I may have written this before, but here are the reasons I myself struggled submitting in the past.
Whether or not that applies to the others I cannot say of course:

- The posting process is too awkward. First you have to upload to a sharing platform and then
link from it. I know that also has some advantages, but for the not so computer savvy,
it is an unnecessary hurdle. A simple php-script would help. And host the images locally,
they aren't that big!

- Many times I had a really nice picture in mind I wanted to submit, only to find out that it
was taken too long ago, sometimes only by a month or so. The same thing happened with
my bouncing bee I had in mind when
I suggested the theme for April this year. I ended up not submitting at all.
Yes, it would defeat the idea of "on assignment", but this is the only competition forum on a
site which probably has millions of readers worldwide.

This could really be something! Make it more visible on the homepage and make it easier for
people to submit their best possible efforts for a theme!

Well, that's what I think anyway...

Cheers,

Matthias
