December 2013 Assignment - Submissions

Hi folks, and welcome to December's assignment. This month's special theme was suggested by Bob Andersson:

With the year rapidly drawing to a close I thought we might step outside the usual theme and time limit. Please share "Your best shot of 2013". The only proviso is that it hasn't previously won a competition, here or elsewhere.

Rules
1. You can only submit one picture, and it should be no longer than 1024 pixels on it's longest side.
2. The picture must be taken anytime in 2013.
3. Exercise good judgement about what is appropriate on our forum (see our Forum Rules for more information).
4. Please include a sentence or two describing your picture or the process of taking it, and share some technical info such as the camera, lens, settings and processing.
5. If you have any questions, comments or pictures older than six months, please post them in the Comments and Questions thread.
6. Since I was a day late putting this up and to give you the opportunity to share a picture taken on Dec 31st, submissions will close at midnight GMT on January 1st 2013, after which you can vote for your favorite entry. Good luck!

FISHERMAN ... ESSAOUIRA, MOROCCO

For a snatched shot I was very pleased with the way this came off, the composition 'rule of thirds' happened quite by accident, the strong lines of the boat gunwales helpfully framed the figure and the yellow complements the blue. There IS a God!

Her facial expression makes this my favourite. I spent some time shooting surfers on jagged rocks and went on flat ground to give my feet a rest when I came across her.

It was New Years Day and I tried to contemplate her thoughts, was she reflecting on the past year or the new year ahead.

Posting my "best" photo this year seems pretty much impossible. I don't know how to define best: should it be
the technically best photograph, or the one that got the most response on social media? Rather than worrying
about the definition of "best", I have chosen to submit the picture I like best, my favorite photo of the year.
I took other pictures that got twice or three times as much response on social media, but still, this is my choice
for my best shot of 2013.

New Year's Eve, Reykjavik-style!

One of my favourite photos of 2013 was taken just one second into the New Year while I was watching the chaotic fireworks display in Reykjavik, Iceland! This is not a composite image, it's a single exposure which illustrates the variety and quantity of fireworks going off in every direction! I took it with a Panasonic Lumix GX1 and 7-14mm lens. The exposure here was six seconds at f14 and a sensitivity of 160 ISO, the lowest for the GX1. Since the fireworks were filling the sky, I zoomed a bit wider as the night went on, shooting this one at 10mm for a 20mm equivalent field of view.
