November 2013 Assignment - Submissions

Hi folks, and welcome to November's assignment. The theme for this month is "Depth of field as a compositional tool". (i.e. "differential focus", seeexample/explanation here. Any subject is possible, but you'll have to use depth of field creatively.)

Rules
1. You can only submit one picture, and it should be no longer than 1024 pixels on it's longest side.
2. The picture must be taken anytime in the last six months.
3. Exercise good judgement about what is appropriate on our forum (see our Forum Rules for more information).
4. Please include a sentence or two describing your picture or the process of taking it, and share some technical info such as the camera, lens, settings and processing.
5. If you have any questions, comments or pictures older than six months, please post them in the Comments and Questions thread.
6. Submissions will close at midnight GMT on November 30th 2013, after which you can vote for your favorite entry. Good luck!

Taken at a track event I actually took part in, after finishing my race, I went for my bag, sat down at the finish line and tried snapping some shots of other competitors for the assignment, trying to convey the race in a shot. I think this is the one that turned out best. The guy in the background is his competitor.

There was a small bank between the seal viewing area and the sea in the background, but it took a while to find a seal that wasn't sleeping on that ridge.
