I noticed that the "assignment" photos no longer have to have been taken during the current month.

I think this is a great idea for both the quantity & quality of entries to increase!

So many times I see the new month's theme and realize I have the perfect photo - taken in the previous month!

That's the idea behind it Kimchi. The most frequently given reason for not participating is that one just didn't get a chance to head out or get the right picture. Of course, we still encourage everyone to take their pictures now, but should you have a great shot in your library, it's now admissible.

Lifting the time restriction is a great idea, an Oz mag has a 2 year limit on their contests. Bobs entry is going to set the challenge for this month.

It's nice for choosing the pictures and it may improve the 'image quality' but somehow it just reduces the "challenge".

But hey... that's hard this time. Too many shots I could choose.

Interesting twist. Hadn't noticed this.

As I am out a lot working sometimes I can't get the shot in the actual month. I do however have a back catalogue with images that do work.

Great solution.

I think its a good idea, with shiftwork I am often tied up for a week or two before getting time off, this will make it easier. I often think I have plenty of time left before the end of the month and oops its already there.

Some sort of time limit, like 3 month might not a bad idea though, just so people go out and get the photo instead of relying on a back catalogue.

I love the idea to remove the time constraint! It will allow for a lot more submissions.
But I also agree with maxjj to some point.
I think it depends on the challenge.
A shorter time constraint (lets say 6 months) would be ok for this months submission, because "The Great Outdoors" is a pretty wide area of photography and most everyone is shooting outdoors this time of year.
But looking at the previous month's "Juxtaposition". That is really something that you've either done before, or you have some old picture that by chance qualifies. But for most of us it was about thinking and doing a shot specifically for the challenge. A time constraint would therefore be almost pointless.

Just went over the submitted pictures, and WOW: the one mikeroch has submitted is truly awesome for this assignment. I like the other pictures too, but that one really nailed it for me. Looking forward to seeing more entries .

That's a great image you made, Mike! The colours, the light, and the different layers adding a real sense of depth while the deer adds the sense of scale. Depth & scale are some of the keys to making great landscapes, imo.

The panoramic style crop works for landscapes, but I'd be curious to see the uncropped version.

I do but don’t like the idea of no time constraint. There have been many times I could not get one submitted like last month, I had the photo but just never could get it posted. My only issue is if we remove the time constraint it shouldn’t be called an Assignment, it should just be a monthly contest.

Also, looks like everyone is going to dig deep and get their best sunrise/sunset/sky shot so I guess I’ll go back and grab mine to Don’t think I can compete against a few of those though

I think Mike is onto it, its not an assignment anymore. Its become "show us your best shot in your portfolio".

maybe limit the time to the last 2 or 3 month.

I agree with you guys: a "best in portfolio" is not near as much fun as an assignment for which you have to go out and hunt for that awesome picture that fits the bill.

I also prefer the monthly assignment, makes you get out and find new shots plus gives the newer guys a chance.

Maybe we could mix it, every so many months have a no time limit contest?
