May 2013 Assignment - Submissions

Hi folks,

Welcome to May's Photo Competition! The theme for this month is "The Great Outdoors", as chosen by maxjj who won our March competition.
In case you haven't joined our community but would like to showcase your work then why not Register now. It's free and we'd love to see what you can do. Be sure to read the whole post for the rules.

In maxjj's words:

As a nature lover and someone that enjoys the outdoors, I would like the theme to revolve around that.
So for the May's assignment I propose "The Great Outdoors" so any Flora, Fauna, Nature or Landscape Photography.
Maxjj requests you do minimal processing.

Good choice maxjj now that spring is starting in many parts of the world. Gives us all a good reason to head out with our cameras.



The rules! UPDATED

1: You can only submit one image, but there is no time constraint on your submission. Have a great shot from last year's vacation sitting on your hard drive? We would love to see it.
2: All images submitted must be no more than 1024 pixels on their longest side, although you can include a link to a full resolution version. (How to post images in the forum)
3. As always, please exercise good judgement on what is suitable for the forum. Keep it clean and family-friendly or it'll be removed. See the Forum Rules if you are unsure.
4. Please include a sentence or two with your photo describing what you were trying to achieve and if there were any particular challenges in doing so, such as special exposure or lighting setup.
5. Submissions will close at midnight GMT on May 31st 2013. The final poll will follow.

THE PRIZE
In March, I offered the winner of the competition a prize. However, the
condition that there had to be at least 20 entries was not met. Thus, the prize
will be available for May's competition, with the same conditions. Grab your
camera, head out, and shoot your submission for April.

So, what is the prize? It's a copy of Joe McNally's "The moment it clicks",
a great book about photography describing the stories behind some of Joe's
images. Goes for over $30 on Amazon, but you can get it for free. I will even
pay for the shipping myself, which is why I will only do this once, shipping
charges can get crazy here in Holland.

Again, there is one condition: there have to be at least 20 entries. If
there aren't, I might consider moving the prize to next month, or not offer
it anymore and keep the book for myself, I'm not sure yet.

So, if you want a chance to win a free photography book, submit an entry to

Yes, it really was this colour... no adjustments applied. I live in a remote area in the far NW of Scotland. It has disadvantages (city / shopping/ hospitals 100 miles 160km away) but early morning sights such as this compensate enormously!

The thing I personally like most about this picture, is that it is really sharp and detailed even when looking at 100%. The bigger it gets the more I like it, because the 100% image shows some great details. Something you will probably not see at 1024px is that there is a girl sitting next to the driver of the boat, using her phone to record the water skier behind the boat.

Post processing: Cropped off a bit, sharpened a bit, a bit of noise reduction, didn't do much to saturation but did add a bit of contrast. Nothing too special. Have thought about trying to edit out the lens flare, but decided to leave it in there.

PS Need to look up the EXIF to be sure of the settings, but I think I remembered most of my settings correctly.
