AF barely working/very slow

Postby Ruben123 » Sun Sep 21, 2014 10:00 am

Hi all,

My Tamron 17-50 2.8 is auto foussing very slowly. It takes about 1 sec to go from 1ft-inf. and 3s for a back-and-forth AF. I guess it needs oil somewhere. Can I do this myself (Im quite handy)? As its main use is landscapes, it is not the worst problem but it keeps irritating me so if you think it has to be done for a big amount of $$ -not by me then-, I will live with it then.

Oh, and Ive tried is with both 50D and 350D.

Thanks!
Ruben

I would think contacting Tamron's service department, or an independent camera repair shop, would be wiser than self-service. Lubricant that flows into the electronics, or gets onto the elements or aperture blades, could be a real mess to remediate.
Canon 5Ds R/7D2/7D/5D/40D/1D2N; Nikon F6/D3s/D700/FM3A/Coolpix A. Lens selection undergoing changes; some favorites: Zeiss 2/135 APO Sonnar, Canon 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS and 135L, Nikkor 14-24/2.8G and 200/2 VR.

Thanks for the advice. I think you might be right, taking a lens apart is quite dangerous for the wallet if I would do it wrong. Then letting it do is maybe the better bet then.
