Just powered it on again today. Read elsewhere that of the 5 sata ports provided, the one intended for the optical drive is crippled in transfer speed and there are bios patches to force it to work at full speed. However they seem to be written for older versions than the firmware mine shipped with. Not sure I'll need it anyway...
As hinted in another thread, I've been thinking about ram. I can either stick with 2GB ECC it came with, or go to 8GB non-ECC... now, as a dumb server 2GB is fine. My 1st choice for OS though is FreeNAS, which can run with ZFS. I do like a lot of the functions of ZFS, but it is also reported to be very ram hungry, which is where a ram upgrade would come in.
I might still run it as a dumb file server anyway, since the lowest cost route would be to run it to store backups as opposed to primary working copies. So redundant availability isn't too important.
