Canon 1D Mark I

Hi all, just going to do a quick review on my 1d that i got today, can only review the build quality, need to get a cf card for it.

I was surprised when i picked it up, initial thoughts were omg, its HEAVY!
It is built like a tank, the grip is excellent, i have normal hands and it fits perfectly. The shutter button feels different to my 450d, it does not have that half press recognition bump, its like when you get half way the resistance increases.
The buttons are easy to get used to, Theres 3 buttons to the top right of the cam which do 6 jobs, best design ever.
The menu is a little difficult to navigate, its going to take a little while to get used to the wheel at the back.
The autofocus is amazing, it locks on instantly, i was using the 70-200mm f4. Cant wait to see how it tracks a moving subject.
And the 8fps is unbelievable, like a machine gun. The screen is the downside, small and not very clear for reviewing, you can forget about checking focus with it.
The viewfinder is very bright and clear, big step up from the 450d.

Would recommend it to anyone, i paid £276 for it off ebay, and thats with the charger and ac kit. Be careful if your buying, make sure it comes with the charger, the charger is like £100 used off ebay on its own.

Bottom line is go buy yourself one if your a canon user, if your a nikonian buy yourself a d2h. Will post some pics later....enjoy!!

Very interesting... been wondering since I went 5D if going even older would be interesting too.

On the shutter button, I nickname that a soft shutter, which is also present on 5D and 7D. I didn't like it at first but got used to it quickly that I don't think about it now.

I thimk the soft shutter as you call it is because of the weather sealing, just a rough guess.

The 5D doesn't have weather sealing and still has it. The best reason I've heard for it is that as it doesn't click, you can get away with a softer gradual press and therefore less likely to introduce shake when taking a shot.

Yes the soft shutter button as Popo calls it is quite nice, it made me go "huh" when I used my D90 again after a while

Just noticed it can shoot at 1/16000 sec.
Really liking it, the build is just excellent, feature overload.lol

my brother has one of these sitting around collecting dust... know for a fact it doesnt have 2000 pics taken with it. Should ask him for it....

Wow, You'd only get that in full sunlight with bright subjects and an F/2 lens :p

Will post some pics asap, cant find my memory card reader after going and buying a cf card.

The lcd is really annoying me, so small, and you cant zoom in to check focus. The d2h wins there with its 2.5 inch.

@Wolfsong: Go get that 1d, you will be suprised, although i think your 7d is way better in most aspects. All youre getting is a brighter viewfinder then.

The D2H has a pretty clever zoom mechanism (2 actually). I generally just press the center button to zoom in 100% on the active focus point.

Are you serious the 1D can't zoom. that'd be something I wouldn't miss when designing. Imagine "Oh, wer forgot to add zoom capability""No big deal, nobody used that"

Maybe I should have a look to change the 350D to the 1D MkI.
But it costs me atm a bit too much money
