Same build quality - the bill for the tile on my rental deposit was cheaper than a UV, and definitely a lens!

Just bought a 50mm prime lens with a filter on, removed it and saw how clean the glass was, just ordered another 3 filters for the other lenses.

If I know it's going to be wet, say if it's raining or near a waterfall, then I'll use a filter for protection, but otherwise I go commando! I agree, a good lens hood and go a long way to protecting your lens from knocks, bumps and even fingers!

I think a "Depends on the lens" option would sum me up best - of my lenses (see my signature), my 50mm is the only one I don't have a filter on both for UV and for sacrificial purposes. With that said, I do have hoods for all of them.
