Is there Lee-style filter for IR photography?

Postby michael_g » Thu Oct 23, 2014 1:12 am

Hi

I'm thinking of trying out IR photography. I have lee filter system, but are there 4x4 IR filters?
When I google etc, I'm a bit confused about the hits I get.
And I can't really find any tutorials where they use lee filters for IR photography.
They all use circular screw in type filters

Any one have experience with it?

Yup.

If you're in the U.S., you can click over to B&H or Adorama via Gordon's "support me" page (linked above right) and search for "lee infrared filter". Both shops list 87 and 87C versions.

Use should be pretty much the same.

Thanks

B&H has 87 and 87 C
Adorama has 87P

I can't see what the difference is

It says it's for ultraviolet film, it will be ok with digital I guess - I have done the test where you see if the the IR on a remote control etc, is visible through the camera

The difference between the 87 and 87C is the frequency/wave length of light that is passed through. (The "C" is longer; more infrared.)

I believe the "P" designates polyester filter material, as opposed to gelatin, for example.

So the 87 and 87c is a piece of gelagtine you stick on to one of your filters filter, and the P filter is a "real" filter, you slide into the filter holder?

I'm pretty sure both/all are pieces of glass with whichever material coated/applied onto said glass. But you could confirm by contacting Lee.
