Yes, it is possible that the machine in Boots was designed for good all round consumer results. There is usually a disclaimer (terms and conditions) that you are obliged to accept prior to submitting prints to the photolab, with most retailer services. The disclaimer states that you are not allowed to use the service for professional use (I guess that this is to prevent complaints towards results for larger wedding photos).
I asked on a similar thread about this, and Gordon reccomended using higher end photolabs like Metro and Photobox.
