Hi folks,

I've just added this one to my thread Photographing the Image from a Telescope's Eyepiece - please feel free to add any comments there rather than in this thread which is a "Gallery" thread. There's a full description there of how I captured it from a movie file and then applied some extreme post-processing to show the slight variations in colour. I wanted to keep the main post as part of that thread but I hope you don't mind if I also share the image here:

As a "webcam" the Canon 5D Mark II rocks.

Bob.

Edit: Image size reduced slightly so as to be more forum friendly and replaced by version 3.

Housekeeping: I've also done a spot of dusting and removed about half a dozen "comment" posts from this thread as, from Gordon's opening post, "If you have any questions about Lunar photography, please start a new thread- this one is to be used as a gallery of examples!"

My first Moon shot. Nowhere near as good as the others posted here. The frustrating fact is that the image was much more sharp on the live view screen but it was trembling all over it.

Took this shot tonight with my Nikon D7000, a 300mm f2.8 (my new toy) and a 1.7 TC for a focal length of 500mm. This is too much fun!

Hi all, I'm new here.
This is my best moon pic so far. Made in the prime focus of a Skywatcher 8" f/6 Dobsonian. Olympus E-620, ISO 200, 1/250s. Minimal PP: converted to BW, slight contrast enhancement, unsharp mask, slightly cropped.
Image

This is one of my first attempts using eyepiece projection. Skywatcher 8" f/6 Dobsonian. No name cheap Plössl 25mm eyepiece. Olympus E-620, ISO 800, 1/60s.
Minimal PP.
Image

And finaly one of the few pics I could take during the lunar eclipse on june 15th 2011. Skywatcher 8" f/6 Dobsonian. Olympus E-620, ISO 400, 1s.
PP including noise removal, contrast, color saturation, color adjustment... Notice the hot pixels in this image!

Here's a couple of shots I took of the Moon with my D40 a couple of years ago. Sadly it had to go but I've got a new camera now (D5100) and hope to start collecting more photons. Sorry but exact exposure details are on an old computer that needs winding up before it'll start.

Image
Daylight Moon.
Nikon D40, OMC 140 'scope with x0.63 reducer (1250mm, f9) ISO 200. Had to play with the sky a bit due to vignetting caused by the reducer.

Image
Earthshine.
Same set up as above but one exposure for the Earthshine and one for the limb. Seemed simple enough at the time but the terminator needed LOTS of "cosmetic" work to look as it did to the eye.

Image
Mosaic of the Moon
Nikon D40, OMC 140 with x2 Barlow (4000mm, f28) ISO 200, I think the exposure was about 1/15 sec. Took about 100 shots and stitched the best bits together and re-sized. I'm hoping the D5100 is less noisy so I can increase the ISO and shutter speed to counteract atmospheric seeing, the D40 was quite noisy above 800 ISO but the faster shutter would show more (grainy) detail.

Image
x1 crops from the finished mosaic, they look a bit blurred to me now but printed up it looks OK, the bigger the print the further you stand away? :)

Cheers

Image

An unedited, straight from camera, shot. It needs some work, but it still looks pretty good with the Earthshine.

Image

A sliver floating in space.

Image

Finally, yesterday's tiny sliver following the new moon, with a bit of Earthshine.

All shots done with the C8, using a focal reducer for an equivalent focal length of 600mm.

Nothing close to the quality of the others in this thread, however, this was my first attempt.

Hand held, Canon 60D, 300mm.

Far from my best picture but nonetheless.

Edit: Sorry, but the image was way outside our forum guideline of 1024 pixels in its largest dimension so I've replaced the image with a link. Bob Andersson.
