Another cyclone creates great surf at Snapper

Another cyclone now a low off the coast produced 3m+ surf and Snapper Rocks was packed as usual. It’s a wonder more don’t get barrelled by surf boards with so many. The day before a guy got hit in the head by a fin and the tie rope got caught up around his neck and caused a gash, guess he was ok as he walked to the ambulance.

















The surfer above was hurt on the beach around the headland, Duranbah another popular surfing beach.

Great set of action shots! . I'm not surprised there's carnage in the water every now and again; it's busy! Summer time here in South Wales can see our surfing beaches rammed. Not great when you're not fully in control of your board . I usually stay on the beach with the camera instead. it takes some serious skill to be able to dodge people in the water.

Another cracking set 4xxxx. Can't see exif info on these though - which lens do you tend to use for your surfing shots?

Thanks Warth Man. Generally I use auto WB and -0.7 EV, these setting I use all the time as standard for most of my shooting in our sun. Although there is much drama about WB, from my tests with the D7000 the auto selection produces the best result. If it gets it wrong I can open the jpeg in PSE 11 as a raw file and make adjustments as if it was shot in raw.

All the shots here are shot at 200 mm with the 18-200 lens, app mode f8/9 and 200 ISO. This setting will give me a speed of 1/1000 to around 1/1600. I did notice perhaps from unseen cloud the speed dropped on a few and I used ISO 400 on these.

I shoot single shot and 21 point focus area AF. With the above setting besides cropping and resizing I only mostly adjust levels if needed. From memory the first one is SOOC.

Although the 200 mm is not long enough, the IQ of the lens permits heavy cropping if needed and still get a good result.

Maybe I should attach my sets in my signature, all the exifs are intact.

Thanks for the info 4xxxx. You're certainly getting excellent results from the 18-200 and I doubt those whom you've shown now and again with howitzer lenses will be getting much better. I wonder how a 70-300mm with VR would do? I have one but I've never tried it in such circumstances - not that we have anything like this around my part of the world.

I have an early Nikon 70-300 non VR lens. It has no IQ or contrast and to get a decent finish I spent quite some time on different setting to get it to improve. No success everyone turns out soft, now I don’t cry when I put them on the computer and then dump the lot.
