Hi Gordon,

Thanks for great GH4 review.

In the very begging of your review (in second paragraph) is written: “The GH4 can record 4k internally to a UHS Class 3 SD card at 4:2:2 8 bit,…”
As I'm understand this sentence is saying, you can get 4:2:2 on SD card, without any external recorder.

Official web site ( and some other big sellers (B&H) has written (copy from B&H description): “Video recorded to SD cards is 4:2:0 8-bit. Real-time 4:2:2 8-bit and 4:2:2 10-bit video can also be sent to an external monitor or recorder with an optional micro HDMI cable.” So, if I understand correctly you need external recorder to get 4:2:2 8bit and it can't be recorded to SD card inside the GH4.

Did I missed something or there is a mistake in your review?

I bought the GH4 a few months ago and continue to be impressed by the video and stills capability. A few nights ago I took a video twenty minutes after sunset here on Kangaroo Island and was shocked by the quality of the video in such poor light. I was using an Olympus M Zuiko Digital 45mm f1.8 lens on the GH4. Here is a link to the video on Vimeo. There is a bit of noise but considering the lack of light to me it is remarkable. I could barely see the pelicans by eye as they swam between the jetties.

Hello Gordon,

since the release of the GH4 I am considering seriously to buy this nice piece. But I’m slow.
I have gone through almost all of the numerous GH4 reviews which have been published in the past.
Finally I feel confident to say that your review is the most comprehensive and exploratory of all.
Your review is my reference of information about the GH4. Not least because this review has a valuable option
namely the opportunity to test in advance how editing of native 4k files from the GH4 works - or not.

My question is, can you confirm that the 4k video clips given in your review as “original files” are unprocessed
and 1:1 transferred direct from the GH4 to storage medium?
Surprisingly I was able load these files in my Premiere Pro CS6 (I don’t and won’t have CC) without issues.
This was in contrast to what I have heard from “experts”:
“You need to have Adobe’s latest PrPro CC version”
“You need to convert first” or “You need to apply an intermediate codec”

How do you edit 4k files (UHD or Cinema) from the GH4? Any issues?
