DMC-GM1

I really like the look of the new DMC-GM1. After the early reports that it shared a sensor with the GX7, I was initially disappointed that it lacked IBIS and had 50i/60i video support rather than 50p/60p. Having said this, early reports seem positive. I'm really looking forward to seeing Gordon's review!

Panasonic DMC-GM1 vs. Ricoh GR and Coolpix A.

Postby capital » Fri Oct 25, 2013 3:48 am

So the question I now have is: does the Panasonic GM1 now challenge the size, weight, and image quality, feature-set propositions of the Ricoh GR and Nikon Coolpix A?

Well one thing for sure is the aspect ratio is different, but is a pairing of Panasonic GM1 + 14 mm prime competitive with these fixed lens alternatives, who has the edge?

Does the GM1 lose out since it may be considered not as ergonomic (or vice versa)?

Both of the fixed lens compacts have no AA filter with dedicated sensor matched lenses so you'd think they are pixel level sharper, but really is it visible? On the other hand, the GM1 can be considered more versatile b/c of the interchangeable lens mount.

So, I did a little more looking into this question, and I have feeling that while the GM1 is good step forward for m43, it won't beat out the fixed lens compacts for IQ and value for money, since the kit 12-32 is going to be trade off for size and IQ, features, and the prime Panasonic 14mm f/2.5 appears to have IQ issues. Besides, adding the 14mm to the kit totals about $1070, so value is lost.

So if it isn't that great a comparison to the APS-C fixed lens compacts, I guess this GM1 is really challenging Sony's RX100 compacts. If this scenario is more likely the case, it is a bit odd the GM1 forgoes the tilt screen and accessory EVF, not to mention no sensor phase detect auto focus.
