What's the best antivirus software on the market today for Windows Vista? I'm looking for an effective antivirus, but don't want a resource hog. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free, light, and doesn't get in your way.

+1 for Microsoft Security Essentials

I think it's quite nice to not have anti virus messages and prompts constantly nagging at you when you use the computer. MSE does a good job of getting out of the way. It's supposedly not as thorough as some of the paid solutions but I think it's a small trade-off.

I also suggest Microsoft Security Essentials. It does not take up much power and when I used it on my windows computer it did a good job of protecting from viruses. If you do want a paid for package I have heard very good things about Kaspersky. It is meant to be exceptionally good at getting rid of viruses and also not take up too much of the systems power.

I've been using Panda antivirus for a couple of years and it's very efficient at finding pretty much anything, and getting rid of it. But it all depends what kind of web browsing you do, and how much a better security is worth it (what do you stand to lose if you catch a REALLY nasty one and have to reformat).

Hi shumisce,

I guess a lot depends on how you use your computer but Microsoft Security Essentials consistently scores at or near the bottom of the pack. For example, check out the latest real world tests (PDF conducted by AV Comparatives.

Interesting results Bob, not sure why they excluded Norton products. As I have used Norton for many years without crashes, I use it. Only thing I found with it, online renewal cost more then buying another package from the store. :?

Cheers

I stuck with Norton too and like 4xxxx found their subscription renewal price to be virtually double that on offer from a UK retailer chain. I rang them and asked why that should be and also to say that they would lose me as a hitherto loyal subscription customer if they were unable to match the deal offered by others for their own product. They gave me a pretty lame excuse along the lines of them being unable to match a big retailer's price but were unable/unwilling to tell me if the retailer was selling at a loss. Anyway, they matched the deal as a "one-off." If they do try to enforce that at next renewal then that is indeed what it will be if I can get it at half price elsewhere.
