Buying a 10 Megapixel DSLR?

If I were you, I'd hold a couple of these camera's. Then I think you'll find the build quality of for examplthe sony A200 and the Canon 500D much better then the 1000D. I believe it's worth the extra money to buy one step up from the 1000D wich is generally a bottom range DSLR.

I would recommend the D5000 as the penultimate Entry level Nikon. It is a poor man's D90 with most of the juicy bits of the D90, IE: 11 point auto-focus and the same sensor, with the added flexibility of an articulated LCD. If you go with Nikon then get the VR lenses. There are all kinds of sales for a D5000 kit with 2 VR lenses for under $1000 out there.

OTOH - If you don't need video, which is a really silly feature on a DLSR IMO, then why not consider the Olympus e-620 kit (14-42, 40-150)? It is superior to the Nikons in many ways and the Oly glass delivers much better value for the money. If budget is a concern then consider the e-520 kit. The e-520 is equivalent to the D60 with the added features of live-view and in camera stabilization. The kits can be had for under $500 these days.

I love your sandwich but not so much your comment, but you are correct. In my defense all I can say is that this thread was started when 10 MP was the standard entry level which has since been eclipsed by 12 MP. IMO there is no real difference between the two anyhow and anything 10 or above is more or less the same in practical terms.

These days 12 MP is the norm, and whether or not you are looking at 10,12,14 or 19 MP, the focus(sic) should be on getting a camera that suits you. Unless you plan on making poster sized prints, the resolution is really beside the point.

However, you are correct in that this thread appears to be about 10 MP cameras, so I take back everything I said except for the part about the e-520.

Just as the newer cameras usually have 12-18MP and it's not that easy to find a new 10MP camera anymore.

Megapixel count is not an epeen measure. It's just one element of a variety of functions that make a great camera.

I had noticed several days ago that this thread's title was good for a laugh, as 10MP is no longer at the forefront of technology. I have had my first 7D, with 18 MP, over two years, and the 7D was actually introduced in 2009. Probably, this thread does jot need to be pdated, so much as to have its "sticky" status removed, so that it graduallly moves down the page.

It is not that 10 MP cameras are worthless. The family's XTi (400D), with which I stated DSLR photography, and my 40D, both 10 MP, are still quite useful.
