Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 vs Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8

Postby MTFC » Wed Sep 17, 2014 8:59 am

I want to upgrade my kit lens for Canon 70D(crop sensor)…
:)

I find two choices as follows :

1) Canon EFS 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM
2)Tamron SP 24-70 f/2.8 Di VC USD

Does any one has both of above..!? So please answer about this question :
Which one is better in some specification such as Image Quality,Sharpness, Bokeh and so on…, specially for portrait photography( on Canon 70D)…!!? (I don't care about zoom range 8) )

I read a lot of reviews about these lenses separately, but no one compared together…

Please Help me…
Thank You

they are both close enough , only difference is zoom range.

For portrait might you need longer zoom than what you get with 17-55, so 24-70 will be better for that.. If you want good bokeh on a 70D try a prime like the 85 1.8 or the 50 1.4.

Dear maxjj

Thank you for your response…

I know that prime lenses are very good for portrait, but I need a standard zoom lens such as 17-55 or 24-70 or etc.

Do you have both lenses..!?? If you have, please describe about your experiments on both of them.

Thank You.

I don`t have 17-55, I bough the 15-85 instead, I don`t need the 2.8 aperture at the wide angle. however the 2.8 aperture at the 55-70 range is very nice on the 7D.
Seriously the iq will be great on both of them. For me the 17-55 range is to limited and I didn`t need that aperture or the image stabilization at that range.

I would have settled for a 17-70 F4 lens with IS.

You certainly read my review about the Tamron here, didn't you?
The Tamron is a full-frame lens, so it is future-proof should you want to upgrade to a full-frame body sometime in the future.
If you probably stay with an APS-C body in the future the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2,8 USM IS is a pretty good choice: with a crop-factore of 1.6 on a Canon body it offers an equivalent focal range of a 27-88mm lens which is a real all-rounder. But I personally can't say anything about the image-quality of that lens. Tests like this indicate that the lens offers quite good quality.
