There is a pre-owned Nikon-mount Zeiss 2/135 APO available at a nearby camera store. I would probably have to make a painful trade in order to help with the purchase price, so I may decide it is best to wait, as I will retire in the next six months to two years, at which time I can afford a Zeiss lens, new, without trading. There is, however, some redundancy among my wide-angle and mid-range zoom lenses, so trading one, or even two of them, would not be excessively painful, if the Zeiss proves itself to have been worth the sacrifice.

Well, I did not wait. I made a not-too-painful trade, a redundant wide-angle lens, as partial credit, and bought the Zeiss pre-owned 2/135 Sonnar ZF.2 lens. Initial impressions, just hand-held shots thus far, are very favorable. I even found that one of our energetic pups was not an impossible subject. (I have tremendous respect for photographers who shot active subjects before the advent of AF!)

This is my second long-time "grail" lens acquisition this year, the other being the Nikkor 14-24/2.8G. I am now in the interesting position of having achieved all of my major, long-term, realistic lens goals. I am not saying I have bought my last lens, but for the shooting I do now, and plan to try soon, I feel quite well-equipped, optically. My next significant purchase is likely to be something like a tripod head, or another Speedlight.

I just "played" with a pre-owned ZE (Canon EOS-mount) version of this lens, on my new 5Ds R, and found it amazingly feasible, with good technique, hand-held, to attain in-focus images, using the confirmation dot in the viewfinder. It seems that this particular sample of the 2/135 APO Sonnar, at least, is in-tune with the focus of my particular 5Ds R. I probably cannot justify owning the same product for two different camera systems, but it is certainly tempting to trade a lens, or two, and do just that.

Well, I traded two lenses, a Canon 35L and a Nikkor 180/2.8D, toward the like-new pre-owned 2/135 ZE. This particular sample seems to be perfectly calibrated for my Canon 5Ds R, which is significant added value.
