Sigma 35/1.4 DG HSM - official thread - reviewed!

Postby Thomas » Mon Sep 17, 2012 7:52 pm

------------------------------------------
Update: My review is up here!
------------------------------------------

Funny, but Sigma didn't have a single 35mm lens for full-frame/FX bodies - until now! Well, at least it was announced, but I couldn't find any delivery date nor price with the announcement.

Here's an image of the new lens:

Image

Technical data are:
13 lenses in 11 groups
67mm filter-thread
minimum focus distance: 30cm
max magnification 1:5.2
diam/length: 77 x 94 mm
9 aperture-blades

Should be worth a shootout with the Nikon AF-s 35/1.4G :mrgreen:cameralabscameralabs

I am very excited about this lens. Hopefully it will be priced accordingly, just a little bit higher than the Samyang 35 1.4 .

I've got some information from Sigma Germany today that indicate that the delivery date of this lens is not yet clear. I interpret the information as follows: They know of a date "spring 2013" but have heard about end of 2012 too.
Honestly? I think this is just marketing-BS to keep prospective buyers from getting a 35mm lens from the competition over x-mas. A tactic that I understand but abhor.
They have also no information on pricing as of now.
(this is all from official product management contact at Sigma Germany)

This is one of the three lenses they announced, and it looks like they are changing direction. As such, do not expect a cheep and cheerful lens. I would guess it will be priced towards the higher end. Definitely it wont be anywhere near the Samyang MF lens.

Lensrentals have tested one, and in MTF numbers anyway, it makes the Canon equivalent obsolete. They got another 12 coming in so that should help give an indication of possible sample variation.

Yeah, the lens now seems to hit the streets.
But I'll have to wait a bit before my review-copy arrives, because not all backlogs have been fulfilled yet in Germany...

Allegedly there's the date of Jan 18th mentioned on Sigma's Japan website for (broader) availability of the lens for Nikon.
I wonder why the big delay between the first batch and the next - or the Canon version and the Nikon one?

The lens arrived!

Here's a first teaser from my standard testing-portfolio at 40 x focal length: The FX-corner at f1.4 (100% crop):

Image

A pretty astonishing performance. I've never seen the FX-corner on my D800 at f1.4 that sharp! Better than on a Nikon AF-S 35/1.4G.
Unfortunately the DX-corner looks not as good.
Btw: I didn't need to adjust focus to get the center and the FX-corner optimally sharp on a flat target. That indicates no field-curvature for these two points. But optimal focus for the DX-corner seems to lie a bit behind that focal plane.
Will be interesting to compare bokeh.

Almost there. I'm in the last-minute editing of my up-and-coming review complete with comparison to the pro-grade Nikon 35/1.4G to give you the best review and decision-support for this very interesting new lens from Sigma.

Re: Sigma 35/1.4 DG HSM - official thread - reviewed!

With a camera body that also has lens micro-focus adjustment capability (such as my Canon 5D Mk III)...what is the proper methodology: Establish the focus-correction baseline using the camera body's adjust (+10 in my specific case with the 35mm f/1.4 Sigma lens), thereafter tweak flawed focus distances with the Sigma Dock?
With the above method (+10 adjustment by the camera body, the first three Dock-zones each set at "0" (zero) deliver perfect focus (1', 1.5', 6').
Infinity, though, is way out of adjustment; -5 on the Dock in the infinity zone brings infinity-focus into its proper range of focus... but the focus-object at infinity remains noticeably blurred at f/1.4, f/2.8 - does not get sharp until f/5.6 or higher.
In stark contrast: focus distances of 1', 1.5' and 6' are razor sharp at f/1.4, f/2.8, etc., with the above corrections applied (+10 camera body; 0,0,0,-5 on the Sigma Dock)
Infinity refuses to match up. I haven't arrived at a solution despite extensive bench-testing. Anyone have any ideas?

Hello okie, and welcome to the friendly Camera Labs forum!
To enjoy your stay here please have a look at the house-rules!
----
Regarding your question on how to get best focus-adjustment with the new Sigmas: I honestly don't know, because I the USB-dock was not availbale when I tested the lens.
Would be interesting to hear from others who have tried this out!
