The Sony RX10 Camera

Postby capital » Wed Oct 16, 2013 7:16 am

This new camera has a constant F/2.8 lens, which works out to F/7.56 in terms of depth of field, yet they are charging $1300. I thought the Canon G1x was a bit over the top in terms of price when it first came out ($800, now as low as $550), but I think the RX10 has topped that notion. This RX10 is interesting, but I think the reviews will have to be stellar to earn that $1300 price point, especially if the lens under performs.

Also, after seeing the RX10's EVF screen resolution is 1.44 million dots, vs. the RX100II accessory shoe EVF is 2.36 million dots, and taking into account the combined cost of RX100II and the EVF is $1196, I think that the RX100II package is actually the better value, since you get a much smaller camera, plus an EVF with double the resolution, larger max aperture at the wide end, while losing only about 2x telephoto, which can be just cropped in on the RX100II to get a ~5 Mpix image if you really need it.

Found a youtube video by Sony for this camera:

I hear what you're saying, but there's also a lot to like about the RX10 especially for video. I certainly enjoyed playing with it at their press event. I'll be adding more to my preview soon at http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Sony_Cyber-shot_RX10/ and I'll also start an official sticky thread for it.
